Keeping informed on modern health topics for dental practice

The GSYHTA are running a day’s lecture with Professor StJohn Crean from the University of Lancashire at St Pierre Park Hotel on Friday 6th March ‘26 from 8.45am until 4.30pm.

The aim of this lecture is to provide the members of the clinical dental team with a deeper insight into common medical and pharmacological issues they will encounter daily with their patients. The material covered will hopefully increase their awareness of the potential complications and implications for their practice moving forward. The hope is that attendees can understand how to risk assess these conditions in terms of the patients’ expected outcomes. This will prepare colleagues to engage in informed discussions around material risks as expected since the Montgomery ruling in 2015.

 Aims and Objectives

To update dental professionals on current and emerging health topics relevant to clinical dental practice - including facial pain, new medical guidance, medical emergency management, oral medicine developments, new and emerging drug challenges (including weight loss medications) and the recognition of sexually transmitted diseases with oral manifestations-enabling safer, evidenced based and patient centred care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognise the spectrum of facial pain conditions relevant to dental practice and differentiate dental from non-dental causes to support appropriate referral and management pathways.

  2. Interpret and apply recently approved medical subject guidance for dental professionals, incorporating updates into patient assessment and clinical decision-making.

  3. Review current best practice in the prevention and management of medical emergencies in the dental setting, including preparedness, team roles, escalation, and post-incident learning.

  4. Identify current developments in oral medicine, including emerging conditions, diagnostic approaches, referral criteria, and multidisciplinary care principles.

  5. Evaluate new and emerging drug-related challenges, including:

    • anticoagulants and antiplatelets

    • bisphosphonates and bone-modifying agents

    • immunotherapies and biologics

    • recreational substances and polypharmacy

    • weight-loss / anti-obesity medications (e.g., GLP-1 agonists) and their implications for dental care

  6. Recognise the clinical and oral manifestations of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs / STIs) — particularly in the context of rising incidence in older adults — and understand referral pathways, safeguarding considerations, and appropriate professional responses.

  7. Enhance inter-professional communication and documentation for medically complex patients to support safe, coordinated care.

  8. Reflect on how updated knowledge and guidance influence practice, patient communication, risk assessment, and professional responsibility.

Topics Covered

  • Contemporary understanding of facial pain in dental practice

  • New approved medical subject guidance for dental professionals

  • Medical emergencies — current guidance and clinical updates

  • Oral medicine developments and case-based learning

  • New drug challenges in dental practice, including:
