Medical Problems in Dentistry

  • Guernsey Hygienist and Therapist Association 41 High Street Guernsey United Kingdom (map)

Professor StJohnCrean from the University of Lancashire joins us for a day’s lecture at St Pierre Park Hotel

To provide the members of the clinical dental team with a deeper insight into common medical and pharmacological issues they will encounter daily with their patients. The material covered will hopefully increase their awareness of the potential complications and implications for their practice moving forward. The hope is that attendees can understand how to risk assess these conditions in terms of the patients’ expected outcomes. This will prepare colleagues to engage in informed discussions around material risks as expected since the Montgomery ruling in 2015.

 Aims and Objectives

By the end of the session learners should be able to:

  •   Understand the common medical conditions and pharmacological treatments they will encounter on a regular basis in dental practice

  •  Discuss the possible implications and complications of these conditions and how they may affect their discussions and subsequent approach to these patients.

  •   Formulate individualised, written care or treatment plans for patients according to their individual circumstances, medical history, needs and selected treatment options.

  • Be able to obtain, interpret and record an accurate history that incorporates appropriate dental, medical (including medication history and allergies), social, demographical, cultural, nutritional, psychological and genetic factors.

  •  Recognise features of systemic disease which can be noted on patients attending a dental surgery. This should include oral features.

  •  To develop a system of learning to maintain knowledge, understanding and impact of the rapidly growing field of medicine
